About the Medical Laboratory Sciences

The degree course of the Medical Laboratory Sciences specialty is provided at the first (Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences) and Second (Master of Medical Laboratory Sciences) levels of higher education. European School of Medical Laboratory Scientists’ main goal is to prepare high-level specialists capable to provide critical information needed for diagnosis, prognosis, and management of the disease and explore specialized concepts in biochemistry, hematology, transfusion, and transplantation science, microbiology, pathology, immunology, cytogenetic and molecular pathology, histopathological techniques, quantitative medical science, quality assurance systems, and health informatics. The work requires exacting precision and accuracy and is performed in a fast-paced, highly computerized, and technological environment.

MLS students are learning how to perform, develop, evaluate, correlate, and assure the accuracy and validity of laboratory information; direct and supervise clinical laboratory resources and operations, and collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

During their practices, students perform exciting tasks such as:

  • Examining and analyzing blood, body fluids, tissues, and cells;
  • Relaying test results to physicians;
  • Utilizing microscopes, cell counters, and other high-precision lab equipment;
  • Cross-matching blood for transfusion;
  • Monitoring patient outcomes;
  • Performing differential cell counts looking for abnormal cells to aid in the diagnosis of anemia and leukemia;
  • Establishing quality assurance programs to monitor and ensure the accuracy of test results;
  • Overseeing the work of a medical laboratory technician
  • Collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to interpret test results and make treatment decisions;
  • Researching and developing new laboratory tests and procedures;
  • Maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment to ensure the accuracy of test results;
  • Ordering and managing laboratory supplies and inventory;
  • Maintaining accurate and complete laboratory records and reports;
